"annunciation" by Abbe Lubell
July 12 - August 3

In the bible, the angel Gabriel reveals to Mary that she is going to conceive a child who will be born the son of God. When she asks him how this can be since she's never had sex, he replies that nothing is impossible. Many great painters have beautifully depicted this. Here is my attempt to pay homage to them and to try to make sense of the story. In my rendering, the revelation is much less miraculous, not at all religious and much more personal. The delivered message is that our paths in life are actually unknowable. It is tempting to wish for an angel to come to each of us and lay out our purpose in life. But life is too unpredictable. Our paths are tangled and serpentine and often indistinct. It's easy to get lost. Even when we believe we're on a clear path heading toward a specific destination, it can lead to a place we never intended. Or we forget why we chose that particular destination in the first place. At some point it may occur to us that the path itself is all there is.

Still, nothing is impossible.
